Four days into Autism Acceptance Month.
I'm reflecting on a lot of things again, like I always do when it comes to this aspect of my life.
And the most important one...is how I'm starting to embrace my whimsical nerdy self.
No, seriously, it's never too late for whimsy, and you shouldn't care about what other people are going to say.
As an autistic person, I already have a lot of suffering in my life, both from my autism and comorbid adhd + my physical disabilities, and, honestly, I would like to minimize the amount of stress in my life.
Mostly by letting more whimsy inside. I mean, ableists love to police disabled people for literally anything, including "romanticizing" our disabilities, while it's just us trying to enjoy our lives, so I might as well piss them off even more.
As you read all my rambles, you might ask me: Iva, what the fuck this has to do with the original post title?
Well...
I'm saying all that, because the stuff I'm reflecting on includes my middle school years, when I was relentlessly bothered by an asshole guy in my class for my interests.
Guess what, bitch? The weird kid has survived and now puts their weirdness in places where people actually understand them and share the passion for whatever a particular source is meant for.
A lot of weird kids like that are autistic, and yes, we basically hold the entirety of human joy on our shoulders.
One of the perfect examples of this is MetaBrainz Foundation.1
They have a lot of very good projects that are sponsored and expanded by a bunch of nerds from all around the world, including MusicBrainz2 and ListenBrainz3, which I frequent on a daily basis and am really grateful for, because it's entirely human-curated and developed, which is pretty sick considering the fact that we live in the age of AI, when a shit ton of techbros brag about how their slop machines are smart and going to take a lot of people's jobs.
Well, guess what? The bubble is slowly bursting, which means that it's not true. The joy and whimsy of real human intelligence thrives, and if we keep on yelling at big corpo dudes and telling them to fuck off...Sam Altman's dreams of making intelligence a "utility"4 like electricity and water are gonna be crushed...
And the autistic nerds will be the first to piss on their grave.
So yes, as the post title says...we do save the world.
How?
Simple.
By being ourselves. Our authentic whimsical nerdy selves.
Happy Autism Acceptance Month! Be human and preserve the whimsy!
